Daydreaming Magazine /April 25, 2011 by Rebecca Tillett

I'm in this month's issue of Daydreaming Magazine. Once you get through the splash page, just click on April. And please be sure to check out the other artists in that issue...most of the work is illustration or mixed media and I'm thoroughly impressed with it.

Balloon Girl (there is always hope)
Balloon Girl (there is always hope)

I met Melissa, this red-lipped, beautifully inked, raven-haired woman less than 6 months ago. One day, nearly two months ago she confessed her love to me for Banksy’s balloon girl. She said she was dying to recreate it in a photograph for someone special to her, but wanted a snowy-filled backdrop. She wanted that vibrant red heart balloon to pop off a clean white setting.

I loved the idea.

Colorado's Wonder View Tower

My husband and I recently participated in an Atlas Obscura event to get a peek inside the Wonder View Tower in Genoa, Colorado. I'd actually never heard of this place before a friend sent me a link for the AO tour event only days prior to the meet-up. Needless to say, I was hooked and immediately bought tickets.

"Looking down these dreary passages, the dull repose and quiet that prevails, is awful. Occasionally, there is a drowsy sound from some lone weaver’s shuttle, or shoemaker’s last, but it is stifled by the thick walls and heavy dungeon-door, and only serves to make the general stillness more profound. Over the head and face of every prisoner who comes into this melancholy house, a black hood is drawn; and in this dark shroud, an emblem of the curtain dropped between him and the living world."

“Human lives are not pieces of string that can be separated out from a knot of others and laid out straight. Familes are webs. Impossible to touch one part of it without setting the rest vibrating. Impossible to understand one part without having a sense of the whole.” ―Diane Setterfield

Although I've done more than my share of trespassing, it was a bit nerve-wracking doing it so close to home.

The trip was of course, wonderful, until the last 30 minutes of the drive home when Serenica's engine began stalling on us whenever we'd drop beneath a certain speed (hoping it's a minor fix!). Fortunately, after stalling out on several occasions and getting it restarted again, she died right inside our RV storage lot gate and wouldn't turn over.

I probably don't need to say here that I absolutely could not have predicted that it would have been 14 more months before we were ready to post the After shots, but I'm going to say it anyway: I had no idea how long this beast would actually take us to complete.

And then a Woman
And then a Woman

And then a woman appeared on the barren land, with seeds in her teeth, and each limb a root in search of earth to plant themselves. And then a woman appeared on the barren land, and not from the rib of any man, and not for his pleasure or to come to his aid, for without woman, there is no life, and there is no man.

Easier said than done in eastern Colorado these last few winters however, as precipitation doesn’t often come (no matter the fervent predictions from our oft-wrong meteorologists), or stick around for long when it does choose to grace us with its presence.

So we agreed we’d both try to drop everything the next time it snowed, chasing the colorless backdrop with a bright red heart balloon in hand.

Sunday, January 21st, Denver was the lucky recipient of a brief winter storm. Monday morning I messaged Melissa and asked if she’d be available around 3 or 4 for our Banksy shoot.

She adjusted her plans for that day and we agreed on a meeting spot.
I’d bring my camera, she’d come in a white dress with a red heart balloon. (By the way, because temperature affects the density of gasses, helium-filled balloons can actually start sinking in cold weather. File that one away under Random Shit Worth Knowing.) Unfortunately, by that evening melting snow was already in full effect. The area we chose for our shoot was already shedding its bleached white blanket for the earthy browns beneath it, a setting I had no qualms with for portraits. ...But for our Banksy tribute? I wasn’t too thrilled.
I would invest ample time in post-production work to bring Melissa’s vision to life.

Where the world leaves us wanting, we use our imaginations to populate the voids.

Margareth Thatcher on TV
Shocked by the deaths that took place in Beijing
It seems strange that she should be offended
The same orders are given by her
I've said this before now
You said I was childish and you'll say it now
Remember what I told you
If they hated me they will hate you
England's not the mythical land of Madame George and roses
It's the home of police who kill black boys on mopeds
And I love my boy and that's why I'm leaving
I don't want him to be aware that there's
Any such thing as grieving
Young mother down at Smithfield
Five a.m., looking for food for her kids
In her arms she holds three cold babies
And the first word that they learned was please
These are dangerous days
To say what you feel is to dig your own grave
Remember what I told you
If you were of the world they would love you
England's not the mythical land of Madame George and roses
It's the home of police who kill blacks boys on mopeds
And I love my boy and that's why I'm leaving
I don't want him to be aware that there's
Any such thing as grieving

Been playing this one on the guitar lately. Been a favorite Sinead tune for many years (Chevelle also has a pretty kickass cover, if you’ve never heard it.) Released in 1990 and fuck-all has changed, hasn’t it? (Now I just need to learn how to sing) ————————————————

Fun fact about this one: I shot it Christmas morning of 2008 in Colorado Springs (because really, how many opportunities does one get to shoot a naked woman slumped over in front of a McDonald’s sign?) As far as I can tell, it also resembles nothing else in my extensive body of work.

Spent my weekend editing photos of this beauty. Her skin matched the sky and her dress, the snow. (She also did a stellar job of not looking like she was cold af) 😆❤️

Fact: I don’t think I’ve ever shot a model where some laughter, for whatever reason, didn’t ensue. (Uncomfortable settings, awkward poses, wardrobe malfunctions all tend to cause this). Fact: I think I probably laughed more with this awesome chick at our shoot this evening than I have with any other. I swear, guys, balloons are the least predictable prop ever!
“I will be very careful the next time I fall in love, she told herself. Also, she had made a promise to herself that she intended on keeping. She was never going to go out with another writer: no matter how charming, sensitive, inventive or fun they could be. They weren’t worth it in the long run. They were emotionally too expensive and the upkeep was complicated. They were like having a vacuum cleaner around the house that broke all the time and only Einstein could fix it. She wanted her next lover to be a broom.” ― Richard Brautigan

Tell me a story of a time you wanted to cry because you were so touched by a gift. I’ll tell you mine. Four days ago I met a luminous soul for lunch; a beautiful and talented woman who’d found me online and who’d remained on the periphery of my life for far too long. After many many years, off and on, of discussing a maybe meet-up, but never making it happen, we finally turned an abstract into something concrete. She bought me breakfast. She shared the pretty and not-so-pretty stories of her life with me. And then she gave me one of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received: a hand-bound book, blank, to fill with my own writing, except for a single jaw-dropping photograph she shot (beautiful boobs!), and this quote: “And suddenly you know; it’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.” —Meister Eckhart
All I feel is gratitude, for this beginning with this particular soul, and for all the beautiful souls and hearts in my life who remind me of how lucky I am to live this life. And to share it with them. ❤️ @poeticaesthetic — thank you for this. And for you and your kindness. This world is so lucky to have you.
